Anne Spencer (BA Dip. Ed. - Macq Uni, 1975) is a Sydney based artist whose artwork has continued to sell solidly since her first exhibition ‘Luminosity’ in 2005 at Newport Artworks; a sellout of 24 paintings, securing sales from previous catalogues as well as commissions. Concurrently exhibiting and studying art making, Anne has completed traditional techniques of oil painting with Celia Gullet and earlier, year courses on tonalism with Graeme Inson and watercolours with the Julian Ashton Art School. Australian art history with the NSW Art Gallery has been another focus while various short courses and workshops with the National Art School and leading
artists like Jo Bertini and Stephen Harvey, have helped to expand her art education. Anne’s artworks have sold to a multitude of local Australian clients as well as internationally in London, Switzerland, Singapore and New York City. She currently paints full-time in her Mona Vale studio on the Northern Beaches of Sydney. My artwork is semi representational. I don’t try to imitate nature but to create in paint the essence of how I react to, or relate to a given experience/my surroundings or landscape. This reaction I try to describe using colour, simplified line, shape and forms to capture this essence. Depth interests me but not perspective. I like layers, foregrounds and backgrounds. I use oil paint tints, translucent glazes and oil sticks/bars to give me the type of line and colours that interest me. I approach my surroundings as a series of shapes and configurations. Painting is a pleasure and a form of nlightenment where I lose myself in time. I agree with Wolf Kahn - “an artist thinks with a brush in their hand”.
